October 29, 2026
Davidson's December calendar is more compact this year than it has been in a long time. From Wednesday, December 2, through Sunday, December 6, the town holds its five biggest holiday events back to back. Those are the Davidson College Holiday Gala, three nights of Christmas in Davidson, the North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade and Christmas Vespers. All five sit within a short walk of the Town Green. The parade has also lost about half its length because of road construction on Hwy 115, so for the first time in years the parade route ends close to where it begins.
If you live here, that changes how you plan the week. Instead of a season spread across a month, you get one dense stretch of five days in the middle of town. Some quieter dates fall before it and some after.
The 44th annual North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade steps off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 5. Town Communications announced in a September 17 route update on News of Davidson that this year's parade will follow a new route "due to North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) road construction on Hwy 115."
The 2026 route covers about one mile:
Last year's parade was a longer procession. The Town's 2025 notice described a route of roughly two miles that ended in Cornelius.
The shorter route also means a smaller parade. The Town will accept only 50 entries this year, and vehicle entries are limited to two axles. Trailers are allowed if they stay within the vehicle's rated towing capacity, carry current registration and meet safety requirements. With fewer floats and half the distance, the parade will pass more quickly than in past years, so arriving late carries more risk.
The Town's notice refers to Hwy 115 construction in general terms. The best-known work on that corridor is NCDOT's pair of roundabout projects at the Davidson and Cornelius line. One rebuilds the Potts Street and NC 115 intersection. The other adds a Potts-Sloan-Beaty connector with a roundabout at Sloan, Griffith and Beaty. NCDOT's March 2026 release said both should finish in late 2026, with landscaping continuing into spring 2027.
The tradition itself is old. A 2023 history of the season from News of Davidson dates the parade to 1982 and credits Alex Beam as its founder and longtime manager. One part has not changed. The Merry Main Street Tricycle Race still follows the parade on Main Street in front of the Town Green. Teams of four, sponsored by Davidson businesses, ride through an obstacle course.
Because the parade now finishes so close to the Town Green, Saturday, December 5 becomes one long day downtown. The parade runs at 1 p.m., the tricycle race follows, and Christmas in Davidson reopens at 6 p.m. The full week looks like this:
| Date | Event | Time | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wed., Dec. 2 | Davidson College Holiday Gala | 5:30 and 8 p.m. | Duke Family Performance Hall, ticketed |
| Thu., Dec. 3 | Christmas in Davidson opens with Santa's arrival and the tree lighting | 6 to 9 p.m. | Town Green and downtown |
| Fri., Dec. 4 | Christmas in Davidson, night two | 6 to 9 p.m. | Downtown |
| Sat., Dec. 5 | North Mecklenburg Holiday Parade, then the Merry Main Street Tricycle Race | 1 p.m. | Main and Griffith to South Street |
| Sat., Dec. 5 | Christmas in Davidson, final night | 6 to 9 p.m. | Downtown |
| Sun., Dec. 6 | Christmas Vespers | 7 p.m. prelude, 7:30 p.m. service | Davidson College Presbyterian Church, free |
Christmas in Davidson runs 6 to 9 p.m. each night. Santa arrives and the annual tree lighting happens on the Town Green at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 3. The Town's 2026 announcement describes food, artisan vendors and entertainment on two performance stages across all three nights. According to News of Davidson's history of the event, the town held the first Christmas in Davidson in 1988, and the event has grown into a three-day celebration that draws about 20,000 people.
Giving Tree Village, presented by the Rotary Club of Davidson, keeps the same nights and hours, December 3 to 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. Its website describes it as a fundraiser for local nonprofits.
The Holiday Gala comes before all of it, with two shows on Wednesday, December 2. Tickets are sold through the event listing on Davidson Sings. Christmas Vespers closes the week on Sunday evening at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. It is listed as free and open to the public.
The college calendar adds one more event on Friday, December 4. That night, Fall New Music Davidson features violinist Dan Qiao, on the same evening as the second night of Christmas in Davidson.
One competing date sits just outside town. Davidson Community Players opens Irving Berlin's White Christmas on December 3 at Cain Center for the Arts in Cornelius, the same night as the tree lighting. The show runs through December 13, and the DCP show page lists tickets at $20 to $50 plus taxes and fees. If opening night conflicts with your plans, the second weekend gives you room.
The Town's August announcement for 2026 covers dates and hours. It does not include street closures, parking or trolley routes. Last year's details came late. A Town traffic advisory, published on News of Davidson, went out on December 1, 2025, three days before the event opened.
Here is what last year's plan included. Use it only as a guide to the kind of information to watch for this year:
The 2025 notices also gave two different locations for accessible parking. Check the Town's current guidance before you go rather than relying on last year's.
The days on either side of the big week are quieter, and several are worth putting on the calendar now.
Thursday, November 5. The Davidson Lands Conservancy holds its fall Tree Store from 4 to 6:30 p.m. It is offering 100 native trees in seven-gallon containers for residents to adopt, first come, first served. November is planting season, and with only 100 trees available, arriving early helps.
Friday, November 20. The Traditional Series brings Sheila Kay Adams to Davidson College.
Saturday, November 21. This is the last weekly Saturday of the Davidson Farmers Market's prime season, which has run every Saturday since April 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at 120 South Main Street.
Thursday, November 26. The Davidson Turkey Trot starts at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning from Davidson Village Green. It is a downtown 5K, and registration is open on RunSignup.
Tuesday, December 8. The Jazz Combos Fall Concert caps the college's fall performance calendar.
On its Visit page, the Davidson Farmers Market describes its winter season as "first & third Saturdays only." It adds a footnote that this holds "not always but mostly." December is one of the exceptions. The market's full list of dates is the one to plan around:
No market is listed for November 28 or December 5. The first winter market falls on the second Saturday of December, a week after the parade. All winter markets run 9 a.m. to noon. If your Saturday routine includes the market, you will go three weeks without one, from November 21 to December 12.
Sadler Square, at the Griffith Street end of downtown, sits right at the start of the new parade route. It has two restaurants that weren't there for last year's holidays. News of Davidson's listing for Harriet's Hamburgers gives its address as 201 Griffith Street and its hours as 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. It opened in July. Ilios Crafted Greek, a fast-casual Greek restaurant, held its Davidson grand opening on July 17, as News of Davidson reported. Harriet's closes at 9 p.m., the same time as Christmas in Davidson, so a late dinner after the festival means getting there before closing.
Copain Bakery & Provisions and Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen are still on the way. Both were under construction at Sadler Square in May, according to a News of Davidson update. Copain's locations page lists Davidson as "Coming soon" without an opening date.
